Semrush Review 2026: Is This SEO Tool Worth the High Price?

Ad disclaimer: For links on this page, EXPERTE.com may earn a commission from the provider. This supports our work and has no influence on our editorial rating.

Semrush has evolved from a pure SEO tool into a full-scale marketing platform. Today, it covers a wide range of marketing disciplines: from search engine optimization to content marketing, social media, and paid ad campaigns.

This versatility has made it a go-to solution for many digital agencies, but it also comes at a price. Given its significant price tag, we investigated if Semrush truly measures up to more specialized SEO tools.

What is Semrush?

Semrush* started as a search engine optimization tool and has grown into a full-fledged marketing suite over the years. Today, the platform positions itself as an all-in-one marketing solution, covering numerous areas of digital marketing.

Founded in 2008, Semrush was originally based in Russia before re-registering as a U.S. company in 2012. Unlike single-purpose tools, Semrush embraces a broad, all-in-one approach. Its goal is to minimize the need for users to juggle multiple platforms by centralizing marketing tasks.

This wide focus makes Semrush relevant for various disciplines, including SEO management, content marketing, and PPC campaigns.

  • Highly accurate data and robust technical SEO capabilities
In our review, Semrush delivered very accurate data overall, especially for search volumes. The integrated crawler in the Site Audit also analyzes websites thoroughly.

  • Comprehensive marketing suite
Semrush covers far more than just SEO. You get tools for content marketing, social media, PPC, and market analysis all in one place. This often eliminates the need for additional software.

  • Outstanding learning resources and training
With Semrush Academy, the provider offers high-quality training for free. You can take courses and earn recognized certifications.

  • Premium pricing compared to many competitors
Semrush is one of the pricier solutions on the market, especially for advanced features or multiple user licenses. The barrier to entry is high for smaller budgets.

  • Steep learning curve
The sheer volume of features and data can overwhelm beginners at the outset. It takes time to get comfortable with the complex menu structure and numerous dashboards.

  • Inconsistent localization
While generally well-translated, the user interface occasionally mixes English terms and sentences into versions in other languages, which can be disorienting for users relying on those localized interfaces.

Interface and Usability

Interface and Usability (10%)

User interface ?
  • Design & Layout: Functional, data-rich, professional.
  • Navigation: An extensive left sidebar leads to the features.
  • Operation: Experienced SEO users find the operation logical and easy to use. Newcomers need some training due to the many options and data.
  • Data visualization: Dashboards and charts present information.
6/8
Performance ?
  • Speed: The platform operates remarkably fast and stable.
  • Report delivery: Reports based on the database load quickly with the tool.
  • Specific waiting times: Active crawling requires an initial waiting time.
1.5/2

Semrush is a professional, deeply data-driven tool with an expansive feature set, making it both powerful and undeniably complex.

Experienced SEO professionals and marketing experts will likely find the interface logical and efficient. For beginners, however, the sheer number of options and data points can be overwhelming at first. The learning curve is steeper than with some other platforms.

Clear navigation, central dashboard

Navigation primarily occurs via an extensive left sidebar, where all modules and reports are logically organized. After signing up and logging in, you land on your personal dashboard homepage:

The homepage after signing up and logging in.

SEO is just one of several marketing modules in Semrush. You also have access to sections for market research, content marketing, social media, PR, and more. The menu structure is divided into several main areas, which generally keeps things organized.

Within the SEO dashboard, you can either add a domain to start a new project or jump directly into specific analysis areas. This is where the number of options can feel a bit overwhelming at first, until you get familiar with the structure.

In the SEO dashboard, the wealth of options can feel overwhelming at first.

Loading times and language barriers

While longer wait times are common for cloud-based tools, we did experience them during our site audit. Furthermore, the loading times in the backlink audit, which conducts a technical review of backlinks, occasionally interrupted our workflow.

The backlink audit had notably long loading times during our test.

For users who rely on non-English versions, inconsistent localization can be a minor frustration. For instance, prompts like “Start Your Online Presence” might appear in English within an otherwise localized interface, which can be jarring for users not primarily operating in English.

Powerful, but complex to use

Semrush offers a professional, data-driven interface that’s logically structured for experienced users and opens up many paths for analysis.

That said, the sidebar is packed with features and modules, which means beginners will need some time to get up to speed. We also ran into longer loading times in certain audit sections during our test.

1.5/2

Semrush’s competitor overview is broken down into several sections, starting with a dashboard that gives you a high-level look at key metrics and charts. Once you enter your domain, you’ll see data on AI visibility, domain authority, estimated traffic, and keyword coverage.

Along with the numbers, Semrush displays charts showing your domain’s traffic and keyword trends over time.

The main dashboard consolidates several areas: AI visibility, SEO data, and paid marketing information. This can feel a little cluttered initially, especially since these sections also appear as separate items in the sidebar.

Focus on organic strengths

For organic search, the next view is significantly improved. This page is cleaner and zeroes in on the data most crucial for traditional SEO. Semrush shows your keyword trends again, along with your top keywords and a breakdown of search intent.

Beyond standard traffic metrics, you’ll also find ad cost estimates, branded traffic (searches for your brand name), and generic traffic (total traffic minus the branded share). This distinction isn’t available in many tools and provides valuable additional insights.

The organic research section helps you understand how strong and comprehensive your domain is—independent of your competitors.

Scroll down, and Semrush adds detailed SERP insights. Charts show the share of AI overviews, image packs, and other SERP features over time. You’ll also see how many of your keywords appear in special Google features like video or news results.

The lower part of the organic research section shows how well your domain performs across all Google features.

Keyword and backlink gap: competition in detail

The keyword gap analysis is where specific competitor sites come into play. Semrush even suggests pertinent competitors automatically.

For a keyword gap analysis, you need a competing website as a reference point.

Once you’ve selected one or more comparison sites, Semrush compiles all the relevant keywords. Pie charts illustrate both the scope of keyword coverage and the overlap between domains.

The “Top Opportunities” section highlights keywords that are particularly promising for expanding your content. Further down, a table lists all keywords alongside their traffic values.

The blue circle (experte.com) overlaps with all three competitor domains.

The backlink gap analysis works in the same way. Semrush automatically suggests competitors whose backlink profiles can be compared directly to yours.

A table shows which sources link to the pages you’re comparing. You can apply various filters—for example, to see the best, weak, strong, shared, or unique backlinks. This helps uncover opportunities for link building.

Sites like amazonaws.com, apple.com, or google.com link to all competitor pages (sometimes multiple times), but not to experte.com.

How reliable is Semrush’s traffic data?

Effective competitor analysis depends on large datasets and long time frames. Semrush delivers on both: its traffic and keyword data extends back up to 14 years, enabling long-term analysis that few other tools can match. All key traffic and keyword metrics are supported:

Semrush’s competitor analysis is remarkably comprehensive. That’s partly because it seamlessly integrates aspects from related areas like off-page SEO and SEA (paid advertising). Many other tools handle these topics in separate modules—or not at all.

Comprehensive competitor insights

Semrush shines with its extensive competitor analysis. It examines your domain in detail while also providing deep insights into your competitors’ strategies. The structure—with a dashboard overview, organic research, and keyword and backlink gap analysis—is logical and covers all the important bases.

The automated competitor suggestions deserve special mention. Traffic estimation accuracy is solid, and the keyword ranking features are comprehensive. Overall, Semrush impresses in this area with the breadth and depth of its data.

Semrush has one of the largest and fastest backlink databases on the market. Its crawler reliably detects redirects and canonicals and can render JavaScript content. The backlink index is updated daily and flags potentially harmful links using a “Toxicity Score.”

Clear backlink overview

At a glance, Semrush displays key metrics like total backlinks, referring domains, estimated organic traffic, and the number of linking domains.

The tool also classifies the Authority Score using qualitative labels like “good.” A network diagram visualizes how different websites are connected.

Backlink Analytics provides global metrics and visualizes the link network.

Next, you’ll find analyses showing how your link profile has evolved, along with comparisons of new versus lost backlinks and referring domains. To keep things organized, Semrush automatically groups anchor texts and maps them to their respective sources.

The middle section shows that experte.com experienced a decline in backlinks starting in May 2025, before stabilizing again by summer 2025.

The analysis then answers key questions, such as:

  • How many backlinks originate from authoritative versus non-authoritative sources?

  • What types or attributes do the backlinks to your site have?

  • Which countries and top-level domains (TLDs) generate the most backlinks?

These detailed filters and breakdowns help you understand exactly where your links come from and how strong they are.

Backlinks to experte.com mostly come from lower-authority German sites with the “.de” TLD and are typically dofollow text links.

Actionable recommendations for your link profile

For a thorough technical SEO analysis, Semrush’s Backlink Audit is a core component. One standout feature is the Toxicity Score, which categorizes backlinks as “toxic,” “potentially toxic,” or “non-toxic” for quick risk assessment.

You also get data on referring domains and backlinks, broken down into “new,” “broken,” and “lost.” Moreover, you can track how these metrics change over time.

After the analysis runs, Semrush displays actionable recommendations at the top.

The integrated link-building tool also provides direct recommendations to help develop and refine your link strategy, assisting you in locating potential link sources and systematically building valuable backlinks.

The Link Building Tool helps you discover new opportunities for growing your backlink profile.

How many backlink sources does Semrush find?

Semrush often claims to be the most comprehensive tool on the market. Does its backlink index live up to that? Almost: In our comparison, Semrush came in third place with an average of 8,927 referring domains.

The gap to the top (Moz Pro and Ubersuggest) exists but isn’t critical. Semrush delivers very high data density and clearly ranks among the top tools for professional link analysis.

2/2

Semrush approaches keyword research from two angles: you can analyze search terms independently or link them directly to your domain. While many tools treat these approaches separately, Semrush combines them into one seamless workflow.

All relevant keyword metrics at a glance

Most users start with the keyword overview. Here, Semrush displays key metrics like monthly search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent, and cost per click (CPC).

The overview also includes lists of keyword variations and question-based queries. These help you narrow down a topic and spot long-tail opportunities. Settings like target country, language, device type, or currency can be adjusted as needed.

You can manually adjust settings like target country, language, device type, or currency.

Direct connection to your website

One useful feature is that Semrush ties the data directly to your domain. This lets you quickly gauge how hard it will be for your site to rank for a specific term. Semrush uses AI to display your domain’s authority and compares overall search volume against potential traffic.

For the keyword “vpn,” experte.com is only moderately optimized. However, the difficulty scores for keyword variations show that this topic is highly competitive.

If you want to check multiple terms at once, you can use the bulk analysis feature. This allows for side-by-side comparison of different topic variations, proving especially useful when resources are limited. It reveals at a glance which direction offers the most potential and should be prioritized.

Along with “vpn,” you can test other combinations and word orders.

The “Keyword Magic Tool” as an idea generator

For building extensive keyword lists, the “Keyword Magic Tool” is the optimal choice. Enter a seed keyword, and Semrush generates a wide range of related suggestions. For each keyword, you get data like search intent, keyword difficulty (KD), and potential value.

You can sort and filter results in many ways to narrow down your search.

For higher-level planning, there’s the “Keyword Strategy Builder.” This tool helps you identify semantic relationships between terms, showing which keywords belong together thematically. That makes it easier to plan your content strategy and build topic clusters.

In the example “free vpn,” four keyword groups are suggested.

Comprehensive keyword features

A keyword is more than just a search volume number. To evaluate real opportunities, you need to understand the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Semrush covers all the essentials here. It combines classic keyword data with detailed SERP analysis, historical trends, and clearly labeled search intents. Thanks to a wide range of filters, you can quickly find profitable niches even in highly competitive markets.

Fourth-largest keyword database in our comparison

Semrush is known as an all-rounder in online marketing. But can its keyword database keep up with dedicated SEO tools? To find out, we defined 20 identical seed keywords like “vpn” and measured how many keyword variations each tool returned from its database.

With an average of 3,331 keywords found, Semrush landed in fourth place in our test, putting it solidly in the middle of the pack. For most professional use cases, this amount of data is more than enough, even if the top performers have slightly larger databases.

Reliable search volume data

However, quantity isn't everything. For larger campaigns, you need data that is not only plentiful but also reliable. To check the accuracy of search volume estimates, we compared the providers’ numbers against real-world data.

We selected 30 keywords where we or our partner websites consistently rank in the top 3 positions on Google. For these keywords, we can see the actual monthly impressions in Google Search Console. We then compared those real impressions to the search volumes reported by each SEO tool.

This is where Semrush shows its strength as an enterprise solution: with an accuracy rate of over 75%, it landed in second place in our comparison, right behind the outlier Ubersuggest.

While Semrush doesn’t deliver the largest number of keyword suggestions, its data is highly accurate. For anyone who relies on dependable numbers for keyword planning, Semrush is a solid choice.

Semrush is a comprehensive all-in-one marketing suite that goes far beyond traditional SEO. In addition to keyword and competitor analysis, its rank tracking and technical analysis features truly stand out.

Accurate rank tracking

The “Position Tracking” module monitors your search engine rankings with high precision. A major advantage is the update frequency: Semrush checks rankings daily on all plans. You can also configure tracking in detail. For local SEO, you can narrow down the search location to the zip code level.

Position tracking as part of keyword research.

To use the tool, you first need to add a URL and configure the project, after which the full tracking features become available.

Set up a project to stay up-to-date with keyword tracking.

Early AI features for a quick overview

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of the platform. The tool now tracks the presence of “AI Overviews” (Google’s AI-generated answers) in search results.

In Position Tracking, you can see which keywords trigger an AI result and whether your page appears there. Semrush also offers the “AI Visibility Toolkit” to measure your visibility in external chatbots like ChatGPT.

Comprehensive site audit

Semrush’s “Site Audit” tool is one of the strongest solutions on the market. It scans your website and automatically prioritizes issues into “Errors,” “Warnings,” and “Notices.”

The detailed explanations for each issue are especially helpful: Semrush not only clarifies the problem's existence but also provides actionable solutions. Additional links often point to in-depth articles. The audit also checks modern metrics like Core Web Vitals and proper HTTPS implementation.

The site audit evaluates site health, page count, and AI search status.

AI support for content creation

Semrush also helps with content creation. The “SEO Content Template” assists in planning content strategically. It analyzes competing pages for a specific keyword and provides recommendations for your text.

The SEO Content Template helps identify competing pages (rather than direct competitors).

The “SEO Writing Assistant” takes content creation a step further, analyzing existing text, rephrasing passages, or generating entirely new sections:

The Assistant supports your content marketing (a Wikipedia article is used as an example here).

Another notable feature: The “Semrush Rank” shows a list of the world’s most successful websites, sorted by traffic and keywords.

Semrush Rank is a list of the most successful websites (by keywords and traffic).

Plenty of integrations and extra options

Semrush offers deep integrations with the Google ecosystem. You can connect data from Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and Google Business Profile directly. A comprehensive API is also available, though it's reserved for higher-tier plans or requires an additional fee.

Agencies will appreciate the reporting system, which enables the creation and scheduled automatic email delivery of reports. White-label reports, free of the Semrush logo and featuring your branding, are also available.

For large-scale analysis, there’s “Bulk Backlink Analysis.” This feature analyzes up to 200 domains at once in a single batch. Additional toolkits for social media, local listing management, and PPC analysis round out the offering.

Strong audit and versatile tools

This is where Semrush really shines as a comprehensive all-in-one marketing suite. The rank tracking and site audit are among the best on the market. Daily updates and detailed error descriptions can make your day-to-day work much easier.

The content tools also offer real value for editors. The downside: some extra features must be purchased separately. If you need professional white-label reports for clients, for example, you’ll pay extra.

The Semrush Academy lets you learn for free and earn certificates.

Connect with experts

Need hands-on support? Semrush has its matchmaking platform for that. You can search for certified marketing agencies and find partner companies in your area.

For additional support, you can find qualified service providers in your region.

To test Semrush’s customer service, we first asked the chatbot technical and content-related questions. Responses came within seconds and were reliable and accurate. Our email inquiry, however, initially received a generic reply requesting us to log in first. This indicates Semrush prioritizes logged-in customers.

Still, the overall impression on review platforms is positive. Users consistently rate the support as excellent, knowledgeable, and responsive. Regular industry awards back up this assessment.

Excellent academy, solid direct support

Semrush stands out with its extensive educational resources. When it comes to the quality of learning materials (Knowledge Base and Academy), few competitors come close. For quick questions, the chatbot is fast and helpful. Email support, however, is only available for logged-in customers.

Semrush delivers a powerful all-in-one solution that goes well beyond traditional SEO. Its keyword research stands out for its high data accuracy. The technical site audit and daily ranking updates are also among the tool’s strengths.

That said, the sheer number of features comes with some complexity. Beginners will need time to find their way around the extensive interface. Semrush is also relatively expensive, and several extra features come with additional costs.

If your budget allows for it and you need a professional marketing operating system, Semrush is a strong choice. It’s especially well-suited for agencies and ambitious businesses that value deep data and reliable analysis. For smaller projects with tight budgets, though, it may be more than you need.

Semrush User Reviews

What do customers think of Semrush? A look at reviews on platforms like G2, Capterra, and OMR paints a mixed picture. Here are some recurring themes we noticed:

  • Comprehensive all-in-one solution
Users appreciate the enormous range of features. Many agencies point out that it eliminates the need to switch between different tools.

  • Industry-leading data quality
Many reviews highlight the accuracy of the data. The massive keyword and backlink database is considered one of the most reliable sources on the market by professionals.

  • Constant development
The community praises the speed of innovation, which gives users the feeling that they are always working with cutting-edge tools.

  • Steep learning curve for beginners
Newcomers often feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of features. Some reports describe the dashboard as cluttered.

  • High costs and extra fees
Pricing is a common complaint. Even the basic plans are expensive, and additional user licenses and other options often come with steep surcharges.

  • Inconsistent localization
Users in non-English-speaking regions, such as Germany, sometimes criticize the localization. They note that certain sections may only be available in English or present a mix of English and other languages, which can detract from the user experience.
